New Collection: Riser Recliner Chairs
Introducing our new collection of Riser Recliner Chairs
It is almost twenty years since we last manufactured a range of recliner chairs. At that time, due to our recliner mechanism supplier deciding to source from China and only being offered on 12 month guarantees, we reluctantly decided to stop producing recliners.
For a while, we have been continually asked if we manufacture riser recliner chairs. After undertaking extensive research and development, we discovered there was a gap in the market for a high quality, totally British-made product. Along with Seminar British-made mechanisms, we are proud to launch our brand-new collection of riser recliner chairs.
What are Riser Recliner Chairs?
Attenborough chair with buttoned back
A riser recliner chair is a specialist seating option for those who may be starting to find it challenging to get in and out of a regular chair. Riser recliners offer comfortable and safe support to help users stand up from a sitting position more easily. A riser recliner chair can offer more comfortable sitting and reclining positions than regular chairs.
Our riser recliner chairs come with an easy to control 4 button handset with rising functions that gently lift you to a standing position, while the reclining functions allow you to sit back and relax. With duel-motors, you can independently control the backrest and footrest movement, allowing the user to set the most comfortable seating position and then recline while maintaining their preferred angle.

Unfortunately, many of the riser recliner chairs available on the market today are manufactured with Chinese-made mechanisms.
The one condition we made before deciding to develop recliner chairs again was that the mechanism had to be British-made.
Seminar Components design and manufacture all of their reclining seating mechanisms in the UK and ensure that where possible, materials are purchased locally. Celebrating it's 50th year anniversary earlier this year, they are a market leader in bespoke lift and recline seating. They remain the sole UK based original designer and manufacturer of action seating mechanisms. From their 50,000 sq ft facility in Swansea, South Wales, they operate with over 90 full time dedicated employees including their own design team and customer support desk.
Seminar are a design led business with high quality engineering values and quality performance. 50 years of design and manufacturing experience, incorporating the very latest technology and computer aided design software, combined with superior seat mechanism expertise, help them turn new ideas into actual products that benefit their customers and the end user. It is this commitment to quality design and manufacturing expertise that makes Seminar lift and recline mechanisms the choice of leading upholstery companies.
Seminar lift and recline mechanisms follow the following processes:
- Raw Materials: Coiled and tubular prime steel is locally sourced.
- Components manufactured in-house: The prime steel is then pressed, welded and powder-coated on site by their skilled technicians.
- Assembly: Mechanisms are hand-built by the dedicated final assembly team, who pride themselves on the quality of their workmanship.
- Quality control: Every mechanism is thoroughly tested before leaving the factory.
Seminar mechanisms offer an unrivalled 7 Year Warranty on narrow and standard width lift and recline mechanisms up to 160kg lift capacity when supplied and fitted with motor systems. These motor systems are rigorously tested at their in-house facility designed to mimic the products in a typical domestic environment under all conditions including user misuse.
What benefits do the mechanisms we use offer?

Our top of the range, British-made mechanisms offer all of the following benefits:
Dual-motor
The two motors offer independent backrest and footrest settings which allows the user to enjoy a wider range of positions and to set the most comfortable seating position, then recline while maintaining their preferred angle.
Riser setting
When you want to get out of your chair, the motorised mechanism does all of the hard work for you. At a touch of a button on the easy to control handset, the whole body of the chair itself (the back, seat and footrest), slowly rises to place you into a standing position in which you can gently take to your feet. In this way, you can move from a sitting to standing position without placing any strain or pressure on your arms, legs or hips. Once you are standing, the chair can simply be lowered back into the seating position.
Tilt in space
Promotes better posture and pressure redistribution. Also maintains a fixed hip position when reclining.
Up to 160kg/25st lift capacity
Heavy duty mechanism. Our petite size chairs have a maximum lift capacity of 130kg/20st and our regular size chairs 160kg/25st.
Simple to use handset
Four button control which is easy to use. Buttons are back-lit and illuminated to provide visibility in darker environments. Handsets can be placed on either side of the chair to suit left, or right-handed persons.
7 year warranty
Enjoy peace of mind of having an unrivalled 7 year warranty on the motor-fitted mechanism. Being British-made, full product support direct from the UK is also offered by the manufacturer and spare parts if required, such as recliner handsets, motors and control boxes can be easily accessed and supplied to keep your chair running for even longer.
Individually hand-made
Unfortunately, the majority of riser recliner chairs sold in the UK are mass produced in large factories. Many of the best-known brands produce hundreds, if not thousands of chairs per week.
Our riser recliner chairs are individually made in our Long Eaton factory by one skilled upholsterer from start to finish to ensure the highest quality finish possible.
Insist on a quality, hand-built frame
Hand-built frames, made in our own workshop
Unfortunately, many of the riser recliner chairs available on the market today are mass-produced and are made with poor quality frames. These frames typically contain chipboard, MDF and OSB particle boards, even cardboard and are usually only glued and stapled together.
Hand-built in our own workshop, our riser recliner chair frames are only made from 100% hardwood. Joints are glued, screwed and dowelled to ensure they are built to last.
We offer two arm styles on our riser recliner chairs. Both are scroll arms, Harrington with a straight front and Attenborough which is set back for customers who prefer a shallower arm depth.

Many riser recliner chairs are sold in specialist mobility shops, or by companies that sell their products in the customers home. We understand that some people may prefer to avoid the stigma of visiting a mobility shop, or would prefer not to be pressured by commission-hungry salesmen in their own home.
Our riser recliner chairs have been designed to sit alongside and complement our existing classic sofa and chairs ranges. Visit our Long Eaton showroom and you can select your chair from our display models and choose your fabric from our extensive library of swatches and books, with no pressure to buy whatsoever.
We appreciate that on occasions, riser recliner chairs may be required quickly. As a result, we regularly hold a small number of stock chairs in popular fabrics that can be delivered on our next available delivery run to your area, or even taken away on the day if you are able to do so.

Available VAT-free for eligible customers
If you are chronically sick, or have a disabling condition, you may be eligible for VAT relief off our riser recliner chairs if they are for your personal, or domestic use. The current rate of VAT is 20%. Our riser recliner chairs start at £1,499, so with VAT relief, eligible customers could pay as little as £1,249.
For VAT purposes, you’re chronically sick or disabled if you have a:
- Physical or mental impairment which has a long term and substantial adverse effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities.
- Condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness (that’s a long term health condition).
The term ‘chronically sick or disabled’ does not include a person who’s only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, for example with a broken limb or someone who’s elderly but is not chronically sick or disabled.
You do not need HMRC’s permission to declare that you are disabled or chronically sick. If you are not sure if your condition means you are chronically sick or disabled, you may wish to consult your doctor or other medical adviser.
